PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION: The purpose of this classification is to review building plans and specifications; inspect construction work to assure conformance to building and zoning codes.Ìý Duties include, but are not limited to: reviewing plans and specifications; providing information; clarifying building codes; and performing additional duties as assigned by the Building Official.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Ìý The following duties are normal for this position.Ìý These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.Ìý Other duties may be required and assigned. Reviews building plans and specifications and maintains records on same. Provides information and otherwise assists individuals in the preparation of building plans and applications for building permits. Provides information and otherwise assists individuals during the construction of buildings and other structures. Confers with Tennessee Licensing Board Officials regarding licensing renewal verifications and violations. Confers with building officials and clarifies building codes and zoning requirements. Attends seminars and otherwise remains abreast of changes and new developments in codes administration, inspections, and enforcement. Provides legal information regarding court cases to lawyers, defendants, and defendants to include details of zoning ordinances and state licensing requirements. Administers sign permits process; including providing information on regulations, writing permits and reviewing plans. Accepts payments of sign permit fees and issues sign permits. Inspects new sign construction and investigates illegal signs. Issues violators a notification of illegal sign(s) and issues citations to court for sign ordinance violations.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS: ÌýResponds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Department of Health. Performs other related duties as required.Ìý

MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS:Ìý Bachelors Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field; with five (5) years experience in construction, architectural, or related work with progressive responsibility: or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.Ìý A State of Tennessee Building Inspector and Southern Building Code Certification, and Plumbing Inspection, Mechanical Inspector, Building Plans Examiner, Plumbing Plans Examiner, Mechanical Plans Examiner, Zoning and Property Standards Inspector, CABO 1 & 2 Family Dwelling Inspector, Housing Rehabilitation Inspector Certifications is required within one (1) year of employment to maintain this position.Ìý All other certifications are required within two (2) years of employment:Ìý

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: ÌýThis position requires the following physical abilities: Operate a variety of office machines and equipment. Use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials and traverse a variety of terrains. Speak to convey or exchange information. Read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures. Write with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
