The ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ has named Mitchell Squire, an artist and educator whose practice encompasses architecture, visual art and the study of material culture, as its 2020 BarberMcMurry Endowed Professor.

Squire is a nationally recognized educator in the field of architecture, who will be teaching a course entitled, Ideas that Move: Performing Architecture, during the 2020 spring semester. He also will deliver a public lecture on Feb. 5 and exhibit his work in the college’s Gallery 103.

Squire currently is a professor of architecture at Iowa State University and was a visiting professor at the University of Michigan in 2009 and at the University of Minnesota in 2000. He served a three-year term as external examiner at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, from 2014 to 2016.

Squire has mounted solo exhibitions at CUE Art Foundation (NYC), White Cube (London), Bemis Center for Contemporary Art / Carver Bank (Omaha), and the Des Moines Art Center, as well as many academic institutions. His work has appeared in signature group exhibitions in Des Moines, and nationally at Richard Gray Gallery (Chicago), Lesley Heller Gallery (New York) and Sanitary Tortilla Factory (Albuquerque).

Squire has lectured widely in the U.S. and abroad. He earned bachelor of architecture and master of architecture degrees from Iowa State University.

Since 2013, the BarberMcMurry Professorship has funded four internationally recognized architects as teachers and researchers at the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ for the benefit of students.

The professorship was established by Knoxville-based firm, BarberMcMurry Architects, to promote design excellence through teaching and research by a prominent visiting professor who is an internationally or nationally recognized practicing architect. It is the result of a bequest from Blanche Barber and a match by BarberMcMurry leaders, Kelly Headden and Charles Griffin, UT architecture alumni, who matched the Barber gift to produce the $1 million endowment.

Previous BarberMcMurry professors have included Lawrence Scarpa in 2013, Wendell Burnette in 2015 and Billie Faircloth in 2018.
