October 3, 2013 Award-Winning Spanish Architect Iñaqui Carnicero to Lecture
The Robert B. Church III Memorial Lecture Series will welcome on Friday, October 11 at 5:30 p.m. in McCarty Auditorium of the Art + Architecture Building, 1715 Volunteer Blvd. A webcast of the event will occur at .
Carnicero’s lecture, “Second Hand Spaces” will examine his projects, showcasing the relationship between architecture and the economical context. He will discuss the two extreme architectural situations seen in Madrid over the past two decades – new infrastructures and public buildings followed by the re-examination of existing structures, as inspired by economic crisis.
The lecture is co-presented by the , the official Spanish cultural program in the U.S., and the Spain-USA Foundation, which have partnered with the ֲý to bring celebrated Spanish architects and designers to the the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and its communities.
Carnicero, whose rich career as an architect and design professor, is recipient of numerous accolades, including the 2012 Design Vanguard Award from Architectural Record, the 2012 Hauser Award, the 2012 FAD Spanish Architecture and Public Opinion Award, the 2011 Emerging Architecture Award Architectural Review, and the 2009 Rome Prize.
His varied work includes a building for C.E.U. Polytechnic University, the restoration of an Arab Tower in Guadalajara, and a cultural multi-use center in a former slaughterhouse of Matadero-Madrid. He has lectured at Cornell, Rice, Berkeley, Cervantes Institute in Prague, London Roca Gallery and many other prestigious institutions.
Design professionals may receive continuing education credits by attending or viewing Carnierco’s lectures. UT students may also receive supplemental experience hours in the Intern Development Program of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.

- Oct. 14: John Christakos, founder and CEO of innovative furniture company, Blu Dot, will present “Design from the Inside Out.” Collaboration is central to Blu Dot’s design process, which strives “to bring good design to as many people as possible.” Christakos will talk about his company’s inventive use of materials, playful sensibility, and fabrication and assembly strategies.
- Nov. 4: Pavel Zoubok and Rachael Lawe will present “Collage Culture: From Picasso to Facebook.” The pair are from the International Collage Center, an organization dedicated to the research and presentation of collage in its various forms, which provides narrative through collage that is both aesthetic and cultural. The lecture is given in partnership with the UT School of Art.
